CanTeen Kids cancer foundation

August 28, 2009

Written by Fatima Dirani

As year 10 Advance students, we are currently undertaking a project, aiming to help and make a difference in the lives of teenage cancer sufferers, by fundraising money. Every lunch time, we will be outside the library, where a lolly jar competition will be held. Also, students will be able to purchase lolly bags valued at a cost of $2, to help support the foundation. The fundraiser will be held for two weeks so we hope to see all staff members and students contributing and helping to make a difference in the lives of these young teens. We truly appreciate all you support and hope to raise as much money as possible. We must remember this may be a small project but it can make a big difference, as every cent counts.

Details- Lolly jar Competition: 60cents a guess $1.50 for three guess
-Delicious Lolly bags valued at a price of $2
- Outside the library for approx. two weeks
-All money raised goes to the kids cancer foundation

Constitutional Convention

August 28, 2009

Written by Fatima Dirani, Jennifer Zekirovska

On Monday the 20th of July, a number of year 11 and 10 students had the privilege of attending the regional constitution convention held at Taylors Lake Secondary College. The purpose of the event was to involve youth and raise awareness about the Australian Constitution and issues associated around this topic. The theme of the event was based on the controversial issue“It’s time-Australia should become a republic!”

After a brief introduction and opening of the event, Mr Mathew Goldberg was introduced to share with us his thoughts and opinions regarding the issue. Mr Goldberg clearly stated his pointed of view, highlighting the reasons and benefits of Australia becoming a republic. Whilst inventively listening to the speaker, all students wrote the key points in order to decide on our views and opinions about the issue.

Mr George Bougias was the next guest speaker that passionately informed us why Australia should definitely not become a republic. He seemed passionate about the issue which made it entertaining to watch him debate his point of view, persuading us to agree with his opinion and perspective of the issue.

After a refreshing lunch break, we formed groups were we discussed the issue and listed all our opinions and reasons about the issue. Student then shared the group ideas to the rest of the students at the event, allowing them to hear our opinions.

The event concluded with a quick video made by a previous student that attended the constitutional convention. The video showed us the student’s journey through the event, beginning at the convention then attending parliament and then ending his exciting trip to Canberra.
It was a fantastic event that benefitted us in many ways, allowing us to have a say and state our opinion about issues that will impact our future. It highlighted to us that we are never too young to have a say and state our views and thoughts.

Hopefully all students will get the opportunity to attend the next event which is held in the parliament house, which could possibly lead to a trip to Canberra were youth’s say is heard.

I would like to thank all teachers, especially Ms Jackson that provided us with this fantastic and informative opportunity.

BOOKWEEK

August 28, 2009

Written by Peter Pallaris

Lalor North celebrated Bookweek during the week commencing 24th August, however preparations began much earlier in the year when guest speakers were selected and then booked to speak at our school.

Performance poet Myron Lysenko explained and gave examples of seven different types of poetry in an entertaining and informative way when he talked to our year 9 students on Wednesday. Myron later ran workshops for three classes were he gave students valuable advice on writing poetry.

Author Scot Gardner gave a delightful and entertaining talk to our year 7 and year 8 students on Thursday. He related some stories of his experiences and advised students to look out for stories everywhere. Scot advised students to use their imagination when writing and to ask the question “What if”? Towards the end of his presentation he fascinated our kids with his playing of the didgeridoo and his many accents. Scot later ran writing workshops for our year 7 students.

We also saw brave Lalor North staff and students come dressed as book characters on Thursday. During lunchtime they paraded for a large appreciative student audience.
Our Bookmark design competition was organized by Mrs. Finanzio and was very popular with a wide range of students.

The lunchtime activities we ran were – In which book? Fiction Races, and Who created? They came to you courtesy of the library staff.
