Year 11 & 10 Biology - Excursion to Melbourne Zoo
|
June 2, 2009
|
|
Written by Mariam, Year 10
On Thursday the 14th of May, our biology teacher Mrs Radford organised an excursion to Melbourne Zoo for the Year 11 Biology class and year 10 acceleration students, as a part of our outcome on Unit 1 Area of study 2.
The outcome was a set of worksheets we completed at the zoo and back in class. The focus was about animal digestive systems and their efficiency to absorb important nutrients. Part of that topic was to know the connection between their diet and how long they ate in a day, to give us clues if they’re carnivores, omnivores or herbivores.
After catching the train and arriving at the zoo, we headed off in different groups to take a look at the animals. It was nice to walk around feely just taking pictures of the bears, kangaroos and different animals, even though we had to meet back after awhile. We then entered a classroom with a lizard and a cute monkey, to start of our first educational session.
It was the most interesting part of the day, when Donna the zoo keeper showed us different animal skulls, including a lion skull, a baboon skull and many more! At first we had to arrange them under their supposed feeding statuses, carnivores or omnivores etc... And we actually did a pretty good job! We learnt in our biology class that the different types of teeth had varied functions; from carnassials used to shred meat, and molars to grind plants. From further discussion on an animal’s physical features, Donna told us that the general look of the head and the positioning of their eyes, also gave us good hints. The eye-positioning tells us they might be on the lookout for predators, or in hunt for prey. Their facial features can be either used to scare away predators, show-off in the mating season or just to search for food.
We then set out to finish our worksheets on the feeding habits of zebras and giraffes. In just a few minutes of observing, we were able to notice many details about those animals, and that they don’t just walk around or eat for no reason! Each animal has special feeing needs and different digestion methods, important for its survival in life.
We all have been to Melbourne Zoo before, but as a hands-on activity, we learned a lot and enjoyed our day out, just looking around at different wild animals, having lunch and even buying their cute equivalent, fluffy toys!
On behalf of our Biology class, we’d like to thank Mrs Rhodes for coming along and Mrs Radford, for their hugely appreciated effort in taking us out of class and to the zoo, to complete our task. I’d also like to wish good-luck to everyone on our up-coming biology exam!
