Year 12 Legal Excursion to County and Supreme Courts

June 16, 2009

Written by Carla, Year 12

You would think that going to the County and Supreme courts of Victoria would be the scariest experience of your life right?

Never been more wrong! And I can vouch for that now. Monday 1st of June, the Year 12 Legal Studies class, accompanied by our wonderful Legal teacher, Ms Tsiliris, went to visit the Supreme and County courts of Victoria. The day began with the county court where we were shown, first hand, the roles and locations of each judge, jury and legal representative in the court room. The fraud case then began and we watched at a witness gave his evidence before the court.

After about an hour, we went for a quick lunch break and then went to the Supreme Court (enter scary music). We were led into one of the small court rooms and did a small role play where Nick O was the Judge's assistant and Nick P and myself were the barristers, Nick P representing the accused, Manny. A few of our classmates where then chosen as Jurors where they we're given the chance to excuse themselves form jury duty. In doing so, they were asked to swear the truth and give their reasoning. Some, the judge excused, some not.

The jury gave their verdict and Manny was found guilty (so I win!). We then went into the biggest court room and watched an attempted murder, robbery and fraud case which was soon adjourned because there was insufficient information on an issue.
We went home with a completely new perception of the courts and the legal processes in the court room.

Thanks for a very exciting and memorable day Ms Tsiliris and Happy Birthday Nick P!

Swine Flu Update

June 5, 2009

As you would be aware, Victoria is now in a modified ‘sustain’ phase of its plan to manage the impact of H1N1 Influenza (Human Swine Flu) in our community.

This means that only children confirmed by a doctor as having the virus will be quarantined. Those sharing a house with a confirmed case will not be required to enter quarantine, unless they too are confirmed as having the virus.

Classes who may have been in contact with a confirmed case will no longer be quarantined, and schools will no longer be partially or fully closed.
Students who are feeling unwell should remain at home and not attend school. Students and families with flu-like symptoms are advised to seek medical attention and limit their contact with others.

If your child becomes ill at school, we will contact you immediately and ask you to arrange to collect your child. Please make sure that we have your up-to-date contact details.

It should be remembered, however, that the virus has so far been mild and can be compared to our normal winter flu.

Good general hygiene remains the best defence against the flu and families should continue to ensure children regularly washing their hands and cover their nose and mouth if sneezing and coughing. This practice is being reinforced with your children while at school.

If you have any specific concerns:
• Visit www.health.vic.gov.au
• Call the Swine Influenza Hotline on 180 2007
• Call Nurse-on-Call on 1300 606 024 – for expert health information (freecall 24 hours, 7 days)
• Visit your doctor (GP) – if you have an influenza-like illness (fever, cough and fatigue).

The Department of Human Services is also continuing to ask parents of children returning from USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Panama to voluntarily keep their children home for seven (7) days from arrival back in Australia. This is a further precautionary measure to assist in managing the further spread of the virus.

Brooke Addamo's 'Love Will Never Die' Video Clip.

June 4, 2009

Written by Unal & Jayde, Year 11

On Friday 22nd of May, the year 11 drama class from Lalor North Secondary College was invited to star as extras in former ‘Australian Idol’ contestant Brooke Addamo’s video clip. The video ‘Love Will Never Die’ is based on a young couples never ending love over four generations. This is where the drama class came in. The class of twelve appeared as young students in a 60s high school prom which was filmed in the school gym.

To enable the students to get into character, they were provided with costumes, hair and make-up. This was a process that most of the students had not experienced before. Full of excitement, they began to film their first scene. Students were partnered for the shoot, during which they were to slow dance at the ‘prom’.

From the twelve students, six of them were chosen to take part in scene two with Brooke Addamo herself. They were instructed how to act in the scene. After several takes the director, Chris Kang, yelled the vital words ‘that’s a wrap’ and it was all over.

Students were on set filming for six hours but all were still full of adrenaline at the end. The video is due to be released at the end of June and we all wish Brooke well.

Year 11 VCAL 'Try-A-Trade'

June 3, 2009

Written by Alyshah, Year 11

On Thursday, 21st of May year 11 VCAL students from Lalor North Secondary College and other school went to Broadmeadows to take part in the 'hands-on' "Try-A-Trade" exhibition. They had the opportunity to experience a variety of different careers including cookery (making sushi), bricklaying, and tiling.

Students were allowed to talk to apprentices, tradespeople, and TAFE teachers about careers. After the exhibition, the year 11s were given a chance to eat lunch at the local shopping center before returning to school. Everyone had gained an insight into their chosen career paths and for others, the serious matter of choosing a career was made enjoyable.
