|
August 11, 2009
|
Last week, we at Lalor North Secondary College were pleased to welcome our Local Member of parliament — Mr Harry Jenkins – to our school.
Mr Jenkins was greeted in the car park by a senior student, and then met with Principal Class members and our School Council President, Mr Doug Wilson.
This meeting was an opportunity to "meet and greet" an important community member. Mr Jenkins also had time to participate in a tour of Lalor North SC, and meet briefly with other staff and students.

LNSC Senior Soccer Team goes into State Finals
|
August 3, 2009
|
|
Written by Fiona Shaw
On Wednesday 24th June the senior boys soccer team played at the zone finals at Darebin Sports Complex. The boys were excited on arrival and it was clear that they had the potential to perform well. After a shaky start in the first game against Northcote High School, the team came away with a thankful draw. The second of three games was against Melbourne High School. It was close but Lalor North worked hard to get the win. The third and last game was against Macleod Secondary College which the boys won convincingly. With two wins and a draw, Lalor North secured the flag and all bragging rights. Let’s now look forward to August and the State finals! Well done boys!

VEVELA 4th in ASHTON MUSIC COMPETITION and PERFORM AT NORTHERN REGION ‘SCHOOL OF ROCK’
Congratulations to the students in the Vevela band who recorded the song ‘Hot’n’ Cold’ and entered the Ashton Music Australia-wide song competition. The band eventually came 4th, winning a $1,200 cash prize. The band members and Music staff would like to thank the whole Lalor North school community for supporting the band by voting on-line and keeping them in 1st and 2nd position for most of the weeks.
The Vevela Band recently played with other primary and secondary school bands at the Northern Region SCHOOL OF ROCK concert at Manor on High on Friday 24th July. They were on last and completely ‘ROCKED’ the venue with 3 classic songs, Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’, ‘I’m Yours’ and ‘Hot and Cold’.
Our school will further celebrate the band’s achievement with 2 important events:
A school concert on Tuesday 18th August organised by Year 12 VCAL students and a ‘Big Night Out’ music performance on October 14th with bands from our school and 3 local primary schools (Mill Park Heights Primary, Findon Primary and Lalor North Primary) who recorded CD’s in our music studio.

Information Technology Applications Day - Swinburne University
|
July 27, 2009
|
|
Written by James Lee
On Friday 24th August, Mr. Lee and the VCE ITA Class went to Swinburne University in Hawthorn to participate in a series of workshops and lectures related to their subject.
The workshops were designed to focus on areas that students studying the subject find hard to understand.
The first workshop was on hacking and viruses. The class got a hands-on experience of watching a virus they installed spread through the rest of the computers in the room, and learned ways of protecting themselves without
using any special antivirus or antimalware software.
The next workshop was on Virtual Tools, where students witnessed through multimedia presentations and live demonstrations the different types and how they can be used. Mr. Lee was called upon to play a game of "Guess Who" through a virtual world called "Second Life" to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of virtual collaboration.
After a lunch of free pizza and drinks, the class went to a Networks workshop, where they were shown different hardware and discussed how it is all put together, and quizzed on how they would fix problems should they arise in a network.
Finally, the last session was on exam preparation and advice on how to do well on them - crucial useful information as the end-of-year exam is worth 50% of the whole subject.
The class was well behaved and got a valuable understanding of everything shown on the day. It was also a good insight of what university or further education life would be like once they leave school. Best of all, it was all free!
