Latrobe Uni Biology Class Visit - Ecosystems

October 21, 2009

On the 19th of October, Ms Radford’s Biology class made a trip to La Trobe Uni to study ecosystems. We were strapped in to full body waders and were sent in to two different lakes to extract samples of invertebrates. Each group caught interesting critters including dragonfly larvae and even leeches! We then studied the invertebrates we caught under microscopes, concluding there was more life in the ‘small lake’ and thus the healthier one.

All in all it was a fantastic day and special thanks to Mr Golding for helping supervise the excursion.

-Thao Ngo yr 11

On Monday 19th October, the year 11 Biology class visited La Trobe University’s wildlife sanctuary. While we were there we researched various aquatic ecosystems. We were then broken up in to small groups and had to survey two lakes in the reserve to assess which lake held more variety of wildlife.

We visited the university to learn how to assess an ecosystem’s various qualities such as turbidity, pH, temperature and organism abundance. We left feeling more confident in our knowledge of Ecology.
