Food Technology
The Food technology learning focus is related to the health promotions strand where students examine the relationship between nutrition and stages of growth and development, and the eating practices associated with different stages in life. They analyse the links between diet and the design creativity and Technology domain, where the learning focus is related to Investigating and Designing, Producing, Analysing and Evaluation of products.
Students in year 7 and 8 (Level 5) build on the nutritional knowledge and learn basic skills of producing healthy meals. They learn to investigate appropriate equipment and products, work co-operatively in groups, and evaluate the product made and their ability to manage time and resources.
Each student in level 5 has two lessons per week for a semester, where by the theoretical and practical components are taught.
Students in year 8 having developed basic skills, then examine the use of different technology, and materials, to make more complex products.
At years 9 and 10 food Technology is an elective, where they develop questioning techniques when investigating, designing, planning and evaluating products and
systems.
The focus at Year 9 is to develop their knowledge of Nutrition and learn to make quick, healthy, nutritious meals on a weekly basis. They learn to develop Design Briefs, and are able to produce healthy meals for a variety of occasions. The associated theory looks at lifestyle diseases, and the effect of the carbon footprint on our environment.
At year 10 level, this focus is continued. Students are required to work in groups and independently to design, produce, analyse and evaluate meals. The area of study looks at the effect of multiculturalism on our eating habits . Students complete the project of designing an International foods banquet where they are required to work both independently and as a part of a team and negotiate with other teams to achieve the most successful outcome. They develop a range of planning and organisational skills to ensure that the needs of the task are met.
Cake Decorating
This subject is a semester unit at year 10 and fits into the Design creativity and technology domain.
Students are taught basic cake decorating and icing skills, which includes making icing flowers, piping, and decorative work. The students complete a series of practical projects to develop the skills required to attempt a major design project such as a special occasion cake, during the last term.
Textiles
This is a "hands-on" subject where studetns learn to make soft toys, cushions in the junior forms, and clothes and crafts in the Senior forms; such as macrame, patchwork and embroidery.
Students learn both hand sewing skills and machine skills, developing confidence and ability with each year of study.
Fabric knowledge is gained and fashion is also studied and in recent years, students have been involved in making felt.
Textiles is fun to study and is useful in everyday life.
Materials Technology
Materials technology is broken up into three main areas Wood, Metal and Systems. In each of these subjects a variety of materials and skills developed for using them. The courses look at design, researching and development through to production.
The years 7 to 10 courses are designed to develop student’s skills for Design and Technology courses in years 11 and 12.
The Design and Technology course gets the students to work through the design process to develop a final production piece and folio of their design work.
