English as a second language
ESL classes provide extra English for students who have come to Australia from another country and those who are learning to use English as their main language. Offered in addition to mainstream English, these classes - in small groups, three periods per week plus support and a lunchtime tutorial program - aim to improve communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Students’ work is directed at developing their abilities to produce and respond to spoken and written texts and situations for both school and social situations. Students will build on their present language abilities to practise core literacy skills, extend their vocabulary, and develop the analytical and expression skills needed for mainstream classes across all curriculum areas.
ESL classes are offered at all levels, and as a separate, intensive study group from Years 10 to 12. ESL is offered as an equally accredited subject in VCE.
