At Lalor North Secondary College, our English program is designed to develop the ability to speak, listen, read view and write with enjoyment, purpose and confidence in a wide range of contexts. Revision of parts of speech, grammar and punctuation is undertaken regularly. Students are taught the skills to speak with confidence in a variety of situations in oral presentations and debates.
In reading, students have access to an 'Accelerated Reader Program' where they are challenged and encouraged to read a broad range of genres. In writing, the students are given the opportunities to draft and write in a variety of forms such as narrative, reports, poetry and recounts. We offer an extensive Literacy program to enhance grammatical and literacy skills. Teachers at Lalor North Secondary College are also highly experienced in teaching the High Performance Literacy Strategies of Professor John Munro and incorporate these into their lessons on a regular basis.
At Lalor North Secondary College, we use an Integrated Learning Approach and English is a vital component of this where connections are made between many curriculum areas to stimulate interest and maintain motivation.
We also endeavour to include 'Thinking Skills' into many of our English lessons.
Through the study of English students are also able to develop the skills to find and use information effectively using ICT skills.
Literature
This unit introduces students to a range of literary forms, develops in students an interest in Literature and develops students’ analytical and writing skills through Literature. The literature focus will be novels, short stories, poetry and plays. A variety of poems in various forms will be studied eg. Ballads, sonnets, free verse by famous and unknown authors.
