The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is an accredited certificate course, recognised as an alternative to VCE . Offered in years 11 and 12, this is a practical, vocational option for students who wish to learn a trade. The Certificate articulates into TAFE, Certificate or Diploma courses and can even provide a pathway to some University degrees.
The VCAL gives students practical work-related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills and the opportunity to build personal and work related skills that are essential for life and work.
VCAL students can combine school studies, VCE subjects with TAFE and technical subjects and Certificate courses. Some of these are offered off-site at nearby colleges and campuses. Many students undertake School based apprenticeships, to get a head start in the vocational area of choice. The flexibility of the VCAL course, and the expectation that they will undertake a training course, enables students to study in a course that suits their interests and caters to their needs.
Accredited modules and units are selected from the following compulsory strands:
• Literacy and Numeracy Skills;
• Industry Specific Skills (Work Placement/VET )
• Work Related Skills
• Personal Development Skills
• Academic and vocational subjects of interest (VCE and VET)
