Lalor North SC prides itself in having one of the strongest music programs in the whole Northern Region. The school has wonderful new facilities (rehearsal rooms, professional recording studio), passionate, experienced and dedicated staff and will soon be opening up a brand new Performing Arts Centre! The music program has 3 main areas:
1.CLASSROOM MUSIC: YEARS 7-10
2.VCE VET MUSIC: YEARS 11 & 12
3.INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC- ACROSS ALL YEAR LEVELS
1. CLASSROOM MUSIC: YEARS 7-10
Year 7 & 8 Classroom Music
In this subject students are introduced to the basics of music- rhythm, pitch, notation, harmony, arranging, composing and song-writing. They learn these basics by listening to, exploring and analysing different styles of music. All students explore various music software to develop their basic music skills and also to put together loops and beats to create their own songs in many different styles such as rap, rock, pop, R & B and hip-hop.
Year 9 & 10 SCHOOL OF ROCK
For students who want to learn how to sing, learn an instrument, learn songs, play in a rock band, record a CD in our new studio, create music with computers and become a rock star just like in the movie then Year 9 & 10 School Of Rock is the elective to choose! In these electives students can choose to learn acoustic or electric guitar, singing, drums, bass guitar and keyboards. For those who like creating beats and singing or rapping over the top of them there are opportunities to compose songs on the computer using various programs such as ACID, O-Generator. Music theory is covered using the Music Ace program.
The year 10 SCHOOL OF ROCK elective is based on 4 VCE Vet Music modules which encourage students to practice and learn an instrument, play in a band, record their songs in a studio and perform live to various audiences. This elective is the start of a VET music subject that is offered at Year 11 which leads to a Certificate 2 in Music Industry Skills qualification and a career in the Rock Music Industry.
2. VCE VET MUSIC: YEARS 11 & 12
In this subject students learn about the music industry (e.g. getting gigs, record companies, radio industry, copyright, audio/sound production, possible work placement), improving technical skills on an instrument (e.g. guitar, voice, bass etc.) and learning songs and applying instrument playing skills in a group performance and recording songs in our brand new studio for a CD! It is preferable if students can sing or play an instrument but beginners who are committed to seriously learning an instrument can choose it too.
Assessment is competency based with some graded tasks. The Certificate II & III Music qualification contributes to the VCE as a VCAA approved Units 1-2 and Units 3-4 subject. Successful students are entitled to get up to 6 units in total. A performance exam and study score is available at the certificate III level (usually Year 12)
3. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Lalor North provides opportunies for students at all year levels to learn an instrument such as acoustic or electric guitar, singing, drums, bass guitar, keyboards, saxophone, flute or trumpet. Most lessons are free and the instrumental teachers are all qualified and experienced and work in the music industry. All interested students join the program at the start of each year and eventually play in larger groups (rock bands, singing groups, combined concert bands etc) performing at school and to the community.
